Summit 10: Civil society speakers selected for UN Sustainable Development Summit

We are pleased to share that 24 representatives of civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations and the Major Groups have been selected to speak during the UN Sustainable Development Summit. These speakers were identified through an open, transparent and participatory process involving a civil society Selection Committee, facilitated by UN-NGLS in cooperation with UN DESA, at the request of the Office of the President of the General Assembly. The civil society Selection Committee created a short-list of 80 candidates from 435 applications received, and the President of the General Assembly made the final selection of a diverse set of speakers for this historic Summit to adopt the post-2015 development agenda.

SDGs and the right to health

The Health and Human Rights Journal is running a blog series on SDGs and the right to health.

Paul Hunt, the first Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, has written an essay in which he stresses that accountability for the SDGs must be more rigorous than it was for the MDGs. Summit 9: UN General Assembly agrees outcome document to adopt post-2015 agenda (Part II) – oral revision and reservations

Summit 8: Co-chairs announced for Interactive Dialogues

In a letter dated 31 August 2015, the President of the UN General Assembly has announced the Co-chairs for the interactive dialogues. He also notes on that the dialogue on climate change has been adjusted from 26 September to 27 September 2015, at the request of the delegations of the Heads of State and Government of the Co-chairs.

Summit 7: UN General Assembly agrees outcome document to adopt post-2015 agenda (Part 1)

The UN General Assembly, at its meeting on 1 September 2015, agreed by consensus the outcome document, Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” (2030 Agenda) to adopt the post-2015 development agenda.

The 2030 Agenda was welcomed by Sam Kutesa, General Assembly President as “a historic achievement” adding that “this transformative agenda will open a new chapter in development history.” He thanked Member States, Observers and all Stakeholders for their “active and constructive engagement throughout the process, ” paying special tribute to the Co-facilitators, Ambassadors David Donoghue of Ireland and Macharia Kamau of Kenya...

Summit 5: Arrangements for the UN summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda and the general debate of the 70th session 

Important: Latest information from DESA and NGLS about registration for civil society for the Summit

DESA and NGLS have written to ask those who have registered to attend the Summit, but who are not travelling to New York for it, to inform them by close of business today, Thursday, 27 August, by completing a very short form. 

1    They wish to remind all applicants for registration:

a) Funding is not available from the UN to support your travel.  

b) The UN cannot assist with visa arrangements.

Summit 4: follow up to post-2015 negotiations in September

The Summit, 25-27 September, at which Heads of State and Government will adopt Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, will begin ten days after the opening of the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly. Pope Francis will deliver a statement on the morning of 25 September immediately before it opens. The Summit will include six interactive dialogues: Ending poverty and hunger; Tackling inequalities, empowering women and girls and leaving no one behind; Fostering sustainable economic growth, transformation and promoting sustainable consumption and production; Protecting our planet and combating climate change; Building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions to achieve sustainable development; and Delivering on a revitalized Global Partnership. Many other side events are expected to take place , including the ‘Solutions Summit’ on 27 September.
