The 3rd Regional Conference on Population and Development

The following report was prepared by the International Planned Parenthood Federation-Western Hemisphere Region

The Regional Conference on Population and Development (RCPD), held in Lima, Peru from 7 August to 9 August 9 2018 was the first opportunity for countries to present national reports on implementation of the Montevideo Consensus, as well as for the presentation of a regional report on implementation by ECLAC.  The country reports were surprisingly frank, discussing challenges for implementation, actions taken, and issues they continue to struggle with.  While there is always room for improvement, the RCPD proved conclusively that intergovernmental spaces can function as opportunities for real dialogue, learning, shared challenges, and highlighting critical issues emerging or persisting in the region…

Montevideo Consensus reaffirmed as road map for action on population and development matters 

The third session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean concluded with countries reaffirming the Montevideo Consensus (English/Spanish) as the basis of a comprehensive and strategic road map for national and regional action. 

The Conference, which was held in Lima, Peru, was attended by 192 delegates from 32 of ECLAC’s member countries and one associate member, together with 82 representatives of UN System bodies and intergovernmental organizations, and 320 individuals from civil society…

Remarks by UNFPA Executive Director, at ECLAC Regional Meeting for ICPD+25

In her remarks at the Conference for the Latin American and Caribbean Region, Dr Natalia Kanem, UNFPA Executive Director recalled the Montevideo Consensus as a “bright and powerful beacon of hope,” providing a roadmap for leaving no one behind and reaching those furthest behind first. She looked forward to hearing “how governments, international organizations and civil society are making the Consensus a reality.”…

Zika Virus Declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern

The WHO Director General, Dr Margaret Chan, convened an Emergency Committee made up of 18 experts and advisers, under the International Health Regulations, “to gather advice on the severity of the health threat associated with the continuing spread of Zika virus disease in Latin America and the Caribbean” on 1 February.

In assessing the level of threat, the Committee “looked in particular at the strong association, in time and place, between infection with the Zika virus and a rise in detected cases of congenital malformations and neurological complications.”...

Mainstreaming Gender and Human Rights in Post-2015 Agenda are reaffirmed at the Beijing+20 review for Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin America and Caribbean Special Session on the Beijing Platform for Action was held in Santiago, Chile, on 18-19 November 2014. The event was inaugurated by Chilean President and founding Executive Director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet. ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Barcena, Minister Alejandrina German, Chair of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean and Gülden Türköz-Cosslett, Director of the Bureau for Policy and Programmes at UN Women were in attendance. 

Delegates from 21 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean reaffirmed in an outcome statement their commitment to the Beijing Platform for Action and the removal of barriers to women's active participation in public and private life. They also called for a specific target on gender equality in the post-2015 development agenda, and for mainstreaming gender and human rights in all the objectives, targets and indicators.

Advocacy Workshop for Latin American and Caribbean Region Beijing+20 meeting

Women activists from Latin America and the Caribbean agreed on a regional advocacy strategy in order to ensure that the goals adopted almost 20 years ago at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing are incorporated into the Sustainable Development Goals.Members from more than 60 organizations of the national and regional civil society, representing all the diversity of women, were trained in a workshop given by the Committee of NGOs from Latin America and the Caribbean (CoNGO LAC) on the Status of Women (CSW), with the support of the Committee of NGO CSW New York and the cooperation of the governments of Switzerland and Norway.

ECLAC: Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development

We have received the following from the International Planned Parenthood Federation:

The Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development was adopted on August 15 by official representatives from 38 member countries and associate members of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), who participated at the First Session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in LAC, in Montevideo, Uruguay from 12 to 15 August.  More than 800 people participated, bringing together 24 regional and international agencies and approximately 260 NGOs.
