Women’s Major Group 2014 Response to the Report of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (Final Draft, 8 August 2014)

The Women’s Major Group (WMG) has released its response to the Report of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (Final Draft, 8 August 2014). 

The WMG welcomes the Committee’s recognition that its work must be founded on key Rio principles, including human rights, gender equality, and common but differentiated responsibilities, and that the principle of country ownership is also a basic precept in its work. However, members are concerned that the Committee has not sufficiently integrated these principles into its analysis and recommendations, and that it ultimately does not do enough to challenge a model of development that perpetuates inequalities between rich and poor, men and women, and between developed and developing countries...

Report of the International Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF)

At the end of its fifth and final session, 4-8 August 2014, the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF) finalized and adopted its draft report, which has been forwarded to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) for consideration. 

The Committee used the Monterrey Consensus of the International Conference on Financing for Development as a basis for its analysis, taking into account the work of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (OWG), and the Outcome document of the UN General Assembly Special Event in September 2013, that resolved that the post-2015 development agenda should reinforce the international community’s commitment to poverty eradication and sustainable development and the need for a coherent approach that integrates the three dimensions – economic, environmental and social...

Interactive dialogue with Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing

An interactive dialogue for non-state actors with members of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF) will be held on Tuesday 5 August from 10.00 am – 1.00 pm EST in Conference Room 1 at UN Headquarters, New York. It will inform the fifth plenary session of the ICESDF, which meets from 4-8 August.

As mandated in The Future We Want, the outcome document of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20), the fifth session of the Committee with be finalizing its report proposing options to the UN General Assembly on “an effective sustainable development financing strategy to facilitate the mobilization of resources and their effective use in achieving sustainable development objectives.”...

UN Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF) holds Consultation in Latin American and the Caribbean Region

As reported on the Post-2015 Policy & Practice knowledgebase of international activities on the post-2015 development agenda the UN Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing (ICESDF) held a briefing and open consultation, organized by the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), in Santiago, Chile on 14-15 January 2014. It brought ICESDF members together with academics, civil society, and government representatives from the region to discuss the objectives of the Committee and receive inputs to its work.

Intergovernmental Committee of Experts for Sustainable Development Financing Briefs Stakeholders and hears Civil Society Proposals

As reported on Post-2015 Policy and Practice, the UN Intergovernmental Committee of Experts for Sustainable Development Financing (ICSDF) held an interactive multi-stakeholder dialogue during its second session in New York from 2-6 December 2013.

In reporting on the work of the Committee, Co-Chair Pertti Majanen said that the Committee had begun to address substantive issues. He also announced that a joint meeting is planned with the Open Working Group in early March. The Committee would, however, continue to hold closed sessions.

Outcome of the Regional Consultation Inclusive and Sustainable Development: Perspectives from Europe and Central Asia on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Istanbul, 6-8 November 2013

The regional consultation Inclusive and Sustainable Development: Perspectives from Europe and Central Asia on the Post-2015 Development Agend was held from the 6-8 November 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey. It provided an opportunity to ensure the integration of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) into the regional priorities and to engage with other civil society organization (CSOs), including environmental and education organizations on related issues.

Briefing for UK-based Civil Society Organizations by Ambassador Pertti Majanen, Co-Chair and Liz Ditchburn, member of the UN Expert Committee on Financing for Sustainable Development

According to Ambassador Perrti Majanen, Co-Chair of the UN Expert Committee on Financing for Sustainable Development, the post-2015 development agenda is a “dream and it needs paying for”.  Both he and Liz Ditchburn from the UK Department for International Development, who is also a member of the Committee, gave an important briefing to UK-based civil society in London on Friday 15 November 2013.

Outreach of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing

As reported in an earlier posting the meetings of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing are closed, although a multi-stakeholder dialogue has been scheduled for its second session in December and there will be further such dialogues at future sessions.

It has also been reported by Hilkka Vuorenmaa of Vaestoliitto in Finland to the EruoNGOs that the Committee Co-chairs have decided to form a steering committee of "non-state actors" for the duration of the work of the committee. This steering committee will act as an interface between the committee and non-state actors and help to organize interactive hearings when the Committee meets, including on the selection of speakers. It will comprise eight members:  four from the Major Groups and four (NGOs and business sector) from the Financing for Development (FfD) process. UN DESA Secretariat (DESA and FfD) will make recommendations to the Co-chairs who will be responsible for the final selection.

UN System inputs into the work of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing

A working group of the UN System Task Team (UNTT) has been set up to inform the on-going deliberations on the post-2015 development agenda, as well as to provide background work for the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts on Sustainable Development Financing. Its remit is to “produce background material on financing for sustainable development, taking as much as possible an integrated perspective that addresses social, environmental, and economic dimensions.”
