Regional Population and Development Conference for the Arab States 24-26 June 2013

The ICPD review process is gaining momentum as the first of five regional inter-governmental population conferences is currently underway in Cairo, hosted by the League of Arab States. The Inter-governmental meeting was preceded by a civil society meeting convened by IPPF Arab World Regional Office and a Youth Forum convened by the Arab Youth Coalition for Population and Development.

The civil society meeting convened by IPPF was attended by national NGOs from each country in the region, with strong participation from the youth forum.

Open Working Group opens interactive exchange of views on Health, Population Dynamics 

The Open Working Group (OWG) considered Health, Population Dynamics during its 4th session on 18-19 June 2013. The topics were introduced through keynote addresses by Dr Anarfi Asamoa-Baah, Deputy-Director, WHO and Dr Hans Rosling, Karolinska Institute, Gapminder Foundation and the TST issues notes were presented by WHO and UNFPA. The panelists for the interactive exchange of views were Dr. Jeanette Vega, Managing Director, Rockefeller Foundation and Dr. Paulina K. Makinwa-Adebusoye, Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research.

Open working group: High Level Panel Report introduced by Homi Kharas, Lead Author and Executive Secretary, HLP Secretariat

In introducing the report of the High Level Panel (HLP) Homi Kharas, the Lead Author and Executive Secretary for its Secretariat, apologized as none of the panel members was able to be at the meeting to present the findings of the report. He emphasized that the Panel report had been developed through a highly consultative with many briefings from panel members, as well as the organized interactions with parliamentarians, CSOs, etc and the thematic consultations.

An Action Agenda for Sustainable Development: Report of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)  

The report of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) entitled “An Action Agenda for Sustainable Development,” was delivered to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon by the Leadership Council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network. It outlines 10 sustainable development priorities, covering the four main dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth and the end of poverty, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and good governance.

The FP2020 Reference Group contains 4 working groups. Their aim is to provide technical support in the global effort to support women and girls, no matter where they live, to have the same access to lifesaving contraceptives and services.

Arrangements for CSO input into the 4th Session of the Open Working Group (OWG) 

In order to include concrete proposals and recommendations for the sustainable development goals (SDGs) from a broad range of stakeholders, the Open Working Group (OWG) co-chairs have decided to convene meetings with representatives from Major Groups and other stakeholders from 9:00 to 10:00 each morning during the OWG sessions.  Each of the morning meetings is organized around the thematic clusters that correspond to the organization of work of the open working group for that day.
