The Water Song

The Water Song is a Commonwealth Medical Trust (Commat) project. It involves young people and supports the importance of access to water and the need for action.

It was written by Kendra, a 15-year old South African schoolgirl and David Cousins, singer-songwriter of the UK heritage band Strawbs, during her Christmas school holidays. She took the song to the Head of Music at her school, St Dominic’s Priory in Gqeberha, who agreed to join in the project - and to make it fun…

It is performed by the Foundation Phase Choir (aged 8 and 9) and the Grade Ten Marimba Band.

This video was played by the South African Minister for Water and Sanitation at the 2023 UN Water Conference, held in New York, 22-24 March, attracting some 30,000 delegates from across the world. It was also played at a side event for the UN Commission on the Status of Women and at the UN Economic Commission for Europe CSO consultation for the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development.

Please enjoy the result: To watch the song, go to: https://youtu.be/XnsbN4jbbZM and while you're there click on Subscribe so you can be alerted of our future videos.

For the next phase of the project Commat will encourage the performing of The Water Song by children in schools, or wherever they meet, making the song their own. They can alter the words, sing it their own language, and play it on whatever instruments they may have to hand.

The message remains the same:

“Let’s all join together

Do something about it

Water is scarce

Everywhere”
