Update on high-level political forum (HLPF), 11-20 July, based on briefing from Lotta Tahtinen, UNDESA

The high-level political forum (HLPF) will take place from 11-20 July at the UN and with the theme “leave no one behind” will look at all 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). The modalities for the HLPF are set out in 67/290. There will be a five-day expert level session with interactive roundtables and town hall meetings, followed by a three-day ministerial meeting. 

Registration is open on the CSO Net until 10 June. So far 1100 individuals registered, twice the number of those registered in CSD sessions. CSOs with grounds passes should also register even if the have passes. This is to give better idea of numbers...

Final draft resolution on follow-up and review of 2030 Agenda circulated by co-facilitators

The President of the General Assembly has transmitted the letter and final draft resolution on follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the global level to Member States. The draft is currently under silence procedure until today 8 June, noon (NY time) meaning that if no Member State proposes further amendments, it will be considered to be adopted...

There will be an informal briefing by the President of ECOSOC, H.E. Mr. Oh Joon, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea, on the preparations for the 2016 high-level political forum (HLPF) under the auspices of the ECOSOC and the high-level segment of ECOSOC on Thursday, 9 June, at 3 p.m. (NY time) in conference room 1. Representatives of Member States, the UN system and Major Groups and Other Stakeholders are invited to attend. The meeting will be web cast at webtv.un.org.

Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs

The First annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals will be held at the UN on Monday and Tuesday 6-7 June 2016. This event hosted by the President of ECOSOC is part of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism mandated in the 2030. This event aims to "provide a venue for facilitating interaction, matchmaking and the establishment of networks between relevant stakeholders and multi-stakeholder partnerships in order to identify and examine technology needs and gaps, including with regard to scientific cooperation, innovation and capacity-building, and also in order to help facilitate development, transfer and dissemination of relevant technologies for the sustainable development goals."...

Status of revised “final” draft resolution on follow-up and review of 2030 Agenda

Ambassador Ib Petersen of Denmark announced that based the negotiations by delegates who met in small groups on Friday afternoon , the co-facilitators will work on finalizing this revised text, as it has now been discussed by delegates. The delegates will not be meeting again for consultations next week. Instead the co-facilitators will circulate the final draft in a silent procedure on Monday at Noon, at the latest, with a 24 hour deadline. On Monday, the co-facilitators will inform the PGA about status and result.

Member States agreed that the HLPF themes and subset of goals will remain the same, however  goal 17 will be deleted. Instead the resolution will state in PP4 that MOI to be  reviewed annually. Member States also agreed that there will be two HLPFs under the auspices of ECOSOC and the GA in 2019.

Co-facilitators’ revised final draft of resolution on follow-up and review of 2030 Agenda

As can be seen below in the letter from DESA, the Co-facilitators have circulated a revised final draft of the resolution on follow-up and review. ‘Informal informal’ consultations will begin this afternoon at 1 pm.  While the Co-facilitators wish to complete the negotiations today, a number of areas of contention remain and so a long and protracted session is anticipated, possibly going into next week.

Please note that the text now includes the co-facilitators’ alternative proposals for the themes and sets of goals. The language on “innovative arrangements” as far as Major Groups and other Stakeholders (MGoS) are concerned has been removed, but paragraph 12 still includes the reference to...

World Health Assembly adopts resolution on Health in 2030 Agenda

The Sixty-ninth World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted an important resolution on Health in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

At the time when the draft resolution on follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda is being negotiated (see: Final draft of resolution on follow up and review of 2030 Agenda available now!) this resolution provides an important contribution on sustainable development goal (SDG) 3 “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages” and other health-related targets to the work of the high-level political forum (HLPF).  Indeed it will ensure that the 2030 Agenda will be considered by the WHA at least every two years, as well as being considered by the HLPF, according to procedures currently being discussed...

The Co-facilitators have circulated the final draft of the resolution on the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the global level.
