Latest information on the UN General Assembly Special Event

Further information has been made available on the Special Event, which is being held in the Trusteeship Council Chamber and Conference Room 2.

Opening session: Opening remarks will be given by HE Mr John Ashe, President of the General Assembly; the UN Secretary-General; the President of the European Commission; the Prime Minister of Fiji, on behalf of the Group of 77; the US Secretary of State; the Foreign Minister of Belarus; the President of the World Bank; the Administrator of UNDP; Jeffrey Sachs, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on the MDGs; Bill and Melinda Gates; and Barbara Martinez, Latin American and Caribbean Network of Young People living with HIV.

Countdown to UN General Assembly Special Event, 25 September 2013 No 6  

The Countdown to the UN General Assembly Special Event postings to date have focused on specific meetings or documents. This posting will bring together the some of the other events that involve the private sector and CSOs and are taking place around the Special Event.

Stakeholder Forum's new interactive timeline.

The Stakeholder Forum has created an interactive timeline of key milestones for three of the primary post-Rio+20 processes: the Expert Committee on a Sustainable Development Financing Strategy; the high level political forum; and sustainable development goals. It also outlines key milestones for the post-MDG process, which, along with the SDGs form the central components of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Stakeholder Forum will continue to update the timeline as these processes progress.

Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing - Report of the High-level Panel on Global Sustainability

Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing, the Report of the High-level Panel on Global Sustainability was presented to the Secretary-General in Addis Ababa at the end of January 2012.

The 22-member Panel, co-chaired by Tarja Halonen, President of Finland and Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa was established in August 2010 to formulate a new blueprint for sustainable development and low-carbon prosperity. The Report includes important recommendations on Gender equality and reproductive rights and family planning.

Rio+20: What about population dynamics and reproductive health?

The UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) 'Rio+20' will take place in June this year. The conference will be an important event that is set to not only drive the sustainable development agenda, but influence the international development agenda post-2015. Yet unless the SRHR community acts soon, population dynamics and sexual and reproductive health are likely to remain off the agenda.

UN Development Agenda Beyond 2015/ICPD Beyond 2014 – the Global Context Gita Sen, Professor, Centre for Public Policy, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, India, gave a presentation on the UN Development Agenda Beyond 2015/ICPD Beyond 2014 – the Global Context. She pointed out the challenge of three global process taking place simultaneously, ie Rio + 20, with its High-Level Meeting in 2012; ICPD Beyond 2014; and the 15 year review of the MDGs and what will follow them.

ICPD Beyond 2014 Civil Society Stakeholder Group (Part 1)

UNFPA held a 2-day ICPD Beyond 2014 Civil Society Stakeholder Group Consultation in Istanbul, Turkey, on 9-10 December 2011. It provided an opportunity for some 50 representatives of Civil Society and Youth Organizations to be informed and to share information about the ICPD beyond 2014 operational review process; to discuss its component parts; and to identify thematic issues for consideration. In addition, it gave CSOs and Youth Organizations an opportunity to get feedback as to how they can be involved more effectively in the process.
