Update on Commission on Population and Development negotiations

On 1 May the Chair of the Bureau for the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) circulated the attached letter in which he said that the” potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security and nutrition, and on population and sustainable development more broadly, is too immense. The upcoming session is a unique opportunity for the Commission to launch a call to action to the international community, and to express its solidarity with the most vulnerable people.”

Following a virtual meeting of Member States on 7 May his proposal was accepted by Member States. He will now circulate a concise, 2-page draft text, addressing the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of the special theme of the fifty-third session, with the text replacing the zero draft of the resolution on population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development.

The Secretary-General will release a policy briefing on food security on Monday 11 May and there is also a possibility that the Clair will hold a meeting with civil society organizations during the coming week.
