Sixth meeting of the IAEG-SDGs, 11-14 November, Bahrain: Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 6 July 2017

The Resolution, as adopted by the General Assembly on 6 July 2017 on the work of the Statistical Commission pertaining to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (71/313) completes the adoption of the global indicator framework for the SDGs and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Developed by the IAEG-SDGs, the global indicators are included in an annex.  It is “a voluntary and country-led instrument that includes the initial set of indicators to be refined annually and reviewed comprehensively by the Commission at its fifty-first session, to be held in 2020, and its fifty-sixth session, to be held in 2025”. Indicators will also be developed by Member States at the regional and national levels.

The Statistical Commission is asked to “coordinate the substantive and technical work to develop international statistical standards, methods and guidelines, where necessary, to fully implement the global indicator framework to follow up and review” the SDGs and targets. Further refinement of the framework will also be its responsibility. Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General will continue to maintain the SDG global indicator database, which informs the annual progress reports and ensures transparency on data, statistics and metadata of countries. He will also continue to facilitate collaborations between national statistical systems and relevant international and regional organizations.
