Dr Margaret Chan, Source: WikipediaThe World Health Organization (WHO) is contributing to this initiative at the highest levels. Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, will chair a panel on “increasing access and expanding choice” at which she will state the commitments of WHO.

More information on the Summit and on WHO’s work to improve access to and the quality of reproductive health services, including family planning, can be accessed at http://www.who.int/topics/reproductive_health/en/ from tomorrow, 11 July 2012.

A press release presenting WHO’s views and launching  a series of policy briefs on effective responses to expanding access to family planning will be accessible at: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/en/  at 00.01 Geneva time, 11 July 2012.

The four policy briefs, available at http://www.who.int/reproductivehealth/topics/family_planning/policybriefs/en/index.html, at 00.01 Geneva time, 11 July 2012, focus on expanding access to family planning through:

  • strengthening health system response
  • human resources and scaling up the workforce
  • long-term contraceptive methods
  • addressing the needs of adolescents

The Summit is likely to trigger significant attention to programmes and policies related to family planning. The Department of Reproductive Health and Research/HRP looks forward to continuing collaboration with partners and Member States to increase access to family planning for women and men who want and need it, and to ensure that they are provided with a wide choice of family-planning options, especially in settings where the needs are greatest.
