Summit of the Future No 34: Rev 1 of the Declaration on Future Generations released

Together with their letter of 31 May 2024, Ambassadors Yoka Brandt of the Netherlands and Brian Wallace of Jamaica, made available Rev 1 of the Declaration on Future Generations (DOFG) and its Explanatory Note.
Letter from Co-facilitators
In their letter, the Co-facilitators say that Rev 1 of the DOFG has been “carefully crafted to reflect the collective insights, written inputs, general comments, and interventions made by Member States to date.” They also state that the second reading of the DOFG will take place on 10 June 2024 from 10.00 am to 1 pm. The text will be negotiated paragraph-by-paragraph with Member States and Observers (non-member states, namely the Holy See and State of Palestine) and limited to two (2) minutes per intervention, per paragraph. Those interventions on behalf of groups will be limited to four (4 minutes). If the reading has not been completed, there will be a continuation on 14 June 2024.

Explanatory Note on Rev 1
The Explanatory Note states that Rev 1 builds on written inputs submitted on 19 April, that “provided a diverse array of general comments and recommendations, textual amendments, and new language proposals.” In addition, “oral interventions made during the first reading of the zero-draft”, 14 and 17 May have been “instrumental in shaping the document.”
As guided by Member States, the Co-facilitators “continued to aim for a succinct, action-oriented document following a three-pronged approach.” This means that the document has been adjusted to reflect the usual language and phraseology used in UN documents, eg “elderly” has been replaced by “older persons”. Areas where there is a clear consensus among delegations on priorities, action and language have been prioritized, while those where there was clear divergence have not been included in Rev 1 and elements that are already being “negotiated in detail within the context of the Pact for the Future and/ or the Global Digital Compact” have not brought forward into Rev 1.
In Rev 1, changes related to language and those on which there is consensus are in bold and new language is in blue. A summary of Rev 1 will be posted shortly in Summit of the Future No 35.
