7th meeting of the IAEG-SDGs: UPDATE 7
Experiences in implementing monitoring and reporting on SDGs, including the development and use of National Data Platforms
Presentations on experiences implementing monitoring and reporting on SDGs, including the development and use of National Data Platforms were made by Egypt, Greece and Belarus, as well as a number of UN agencies, namely UNIDO, UN Women and UNICEF and the UN Statistical Division. There were regional presentations from the African Centre for Statistics and the Interstate Statistical Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States, together with presentations from academia and stakeholders on Pradan, 1000 day app and Earth Observation Data.
Marianne Haslegrave, Commat, gave a report on behalf of the Women’s Major Group (WMG). It brings together the initial responses from eight countries of a short questionnaire sent to members of the WMG. These responses differ from country to country with some in the preparation; some in the national level review; and one at the HLPF itself. Other activities include attending workshops / consultations; producing shadow reports; and writing studies and papers.
The following marginalized groups should be included in data for Leave no one behind:
- Indigenous women, including black women of African slave descent and Afro-descendants
- Aged and senior women
- Widows, wives of disappeared
- Women in conflict and security fragile areas
- Women and girls in CEF marriages and victims of FGM
- Women and girls with disabilities
- Women in rural areas
- Fisherwomen
While some of the groups should be captured in disaggregation eg aged and senior women and women with disabilities, there are other marginalized groups such as widows and groups that will be small or localised eg fisherwomen that can easily be left behind and are among the furthest behind, who should be reached first.
Gaps in disaggregation for women of all ages in VNR relate to data on gender and gap analysis and recognition of the contribution made by women. There are also serious concerns about issues such as unpaid work, and they could also arise on the ‘gender pay gap’.
Members of the WMG in two countries also commented that issues related to SDG 5 and gender mainstreaming were not sufficiently addressed. In the case of Argentina, the CSOs used specific studies to provide more disaggregated data. Kenya CSOs contributed to the African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development …and made a difference. The Kenyan CSOs report was also appended to the Government report and they are already working towards the next report.
Meanwhile the WMG will continue to collect experiences of its members in the reporting process and issues such as marginalized women in the context of LNOB.
