Report on the work for the review of progress towards the SDGs

Progress reports from the UN Secretary-General

The UN Secretary-General has issued a report on the work for the review of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It describes the work carried out by the UN Statistics Division (UNSD) in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Secretary-General’s first progress report and Sustainable Development Goals Report 2016

As stated in the report, insofar as the Secretary-General’s first progress report (E/2016/75) is based on data and storylines provided by agencies across the whole UN system, some targets are not reflected because of a lack of data or because their indicators are still undergoing methodological development. (For further information on this report see: High-level political forum – Report of the Secretary-General) The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2016 uses the same data and together these two documents constitute the “first official review of where the world stands in relation to the goals of the 2030 Agenda and will serve as a key benchmark throughout the implementation period of the 2030 Agenda over the next 15 years.” A supplementary annex with global and regional aggregates of the indicators was also released. (paras 2-5)

SDG indicators database

There is a SDG indicators database containing the data on the global SDG indicators used for the above-mentioned reports and country level data as well as regional and global aggregates. There is disaggregated data for many data series where it is available. (paras 6-10)

Development cooperation activities of the UNSD on SDG indicators implementation

UNSD, the Regional Commissions and the specialized agencies, funds and programmes have a history of working closely on statistical development. Currently there is a project that provides assistance to national statistical offices (NSOs) in six pilot countries to measure, monitor, assess and report on progress in achieving the 2030 Agenda. UNSD also works closely within the UN Development Group (UNDG) in providing assistance to countries on implementation of SDG indicators and strengthening statistical capacities for the 2030 Agenda. (paras 11-13)
