On 24 October 2016, the President of the General Assembly appointed the Permanent Representatives of Switzerland and Mexico to the UN as co-facilitators to lead open, transparent and inclusive consultations with Member States on the modalities, timeline, the possible holding of preparatory conferences, and other practicalities relating to the intergovernmental negotiations that will lead to a global compact on safe, regular and orderly migration to be adopted in 2018.

The co-facilitators are encouraging an informal exchange of views in order for Member States to identify the best ways in which to invite civil society, the private sector, diaspora communities and migrant organizations to contribute to the process for the preparation of the global compact.

By request of the co-facilitators and the Office of the President of the General Assembly, UN-NGLS is pleased to share an invitation letter from the co-facilitators to these stakeholder groups to participate in an informal exchange with Member States on Tuesday, 22 November from 16:00 to 18:00 at UN Headquarters. This meeting will be chaired by the co-facilitators. Please find the invitation letter here: http://bit.ly/Co-facilitators-letter-22Nov2016meeting-GCM

Objectives of the meeting

To enable UN Member States to have a better understanding of what potential roles these stakeholder groups might play as Member States commence intergovernmental consultations on the modalities for the preparatory process.

To provide an opportunity for these stakeholder groups to inform Member States about their expertise, and the support, tools and resources that civil society could bring to the process once a modalities resolution is adopted.

To enable Member States to ask specific questions to these relevant stakeholder organizations regarding their possible contributions to the process.
