Update on 4th Meeting of the IAEG-SDGs

The UN Statistical Division (UNSD) has made available an updated Provisional Agenda for the Plenary Session of the Fourth Meeting of the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on the Sustainable Development Goals (IAEG-SDGs) that will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 20-21 October 2016.

Follow the opening of the meeting with introductory remarks from the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA); Francesca Perucci of the UNSD and one of the Co-Chairs of the IAEG-SDGs, there will be updates on the outcomes of ECOSOC and HLPF on SDG indicators and also on the work of the Statistical Commission High-level group for partnership, coordination and capacity building for statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The updated tier system for the various indicators will then be presented, followed by Stakeholder interventions and there will be a review of plans for Tier III indicators and review proposals for the development indicators that do not have an agency involved in their development, again followed by Stakeholder interventions.

The refinement of indicators and future revisions of the indicator framework, presumably taking into account the recent consultation (See: Open Consultation on Possible Refinements to the Global Indicator Framework for the SDGs) will also be discussed as well as reporting from national to international statistical systems, followed by Stakeholder interventions.

The final sessions will consider the work plan for data disaggregation and discussion of strategies and best practices for increasing the levels of disaggregation for SDG indicators and also next steps.

During the meeting there will be two side events. The first is on Household Surveys as a source of data for SDGs, organized by the World Bank (concept paper). The second is on Country guidelines for SDG reporting, organized by UNDP.

Insofar as this meeting is preceded by two days of closed meetings for the members of the IAEG-SDGs, it is difficult to gauge at this time for which items decisions will already have been made. In addition, insofar as civil society organization observers are being asked to pre-organize to develop the statements for their interventions, it will present a challenge for them to make such interventions relevant to the discussions. Nevertheless, this IAEG-SDGs session will provide an opportunity for CSOs to present their concerns related to the role of indicators in the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
