ICPD25 will culminate with the Nairobi Summit to be held 13-15 November 2019.

UN Commission on Population and Development

The process leading up to the Summit will begin at the forthcoming session of the UN Commission on Population and Development (CPD), which will meet 1-5 April at the United Nations in New York.

The CPD General Debate will be focused on (a) Actions for the further implementation of the Programme of Action (PoA) of the International Conference on Population (ICPD) and Development at the global, regional and national levels and (b) Review and appraisal of the ICPD PoA and its contribution to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UN hopes that the CPD outcome will be a political declaration reaffirming ICPD.

The provisional agenda and organization of work are available on the Population Division website.

Nairobi Summit

The deliberations at the Nairobi Summit are expected to focus around five main topics:

They will be considered from the perspective of five accelerators:

The main topics and accelerators will ensure a broad approach to key current issues included in the ICPD agenda. Family planning, maternal mortality and violence and harmful practices constitute the three strategic results that must be achieved by 2030 – zero unmet need for family planning; zero maternal deaths; and zero violence and harmful practices against women and girls, including child marriage and female genital mutilation.

The five main topics and five accelerators come together as 5 x 5, ie 25 for ICPD25
