Use of proxy indicators
The 49th Statistical Commission requested the IAEG-SDGs to “consider the feasibility of using tentative existing indicators as proxies for immediate use to monitor targets, while tier III indicators are finalized”.
While the majority of indicators for SDGs 1-9 are in tier I, the situation is very different as far as Goals 10, 12-14 are concerned. (See here) There are also only tier III indicators for the means of implementation (MOI) targets and there are targets with 2020 deadlines that also only have tier III indicators. These are priorities for the IAEG, meanwhile progress on tier III indicators has been slow.
The 8thmeeting of the IAEG-SDGs will review an initial list of proxy indicators and will suggest a list of proxy indicators to the 50thsession of the Statistical Commission. In preparation the IAEG-SDGs will establish working groups to help to understand those indicators that need much more attention and in its work provide information on the stages that things have to be gone through and the methodology including when and where it was agreed; and when a strategic number of countries have data.
