The High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Transport of LLDCs will review the progress made by LLDCs, as well as challenges, in the development and maintenance of efficient, reliable and sustainable transport systems and the linkages between the Vienna Programme of Action and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the area of transport. The meeting will be held in Santa Cruz, Bolivia from 13-14 October, 2016.
The meeting will be attended by the Ministers of Transport of LLDCs. Ministers of transport of transit developing countries and selected development partners, as well as representatives of the UN system, other international, regional and sub-regional organizations and financial institutions, private sector. The recommendations of the meeting are expected to contribute the perspectives of the LLDCs into the first global sustainable transport conference to be held from 26-27 November 2016 in Turkmenistan. NGOs and other stakeholders will also be invited to participate at senior official level. NGO representatives will be able to attend the plenaries, intervene in the round tables, subject to the availability of time, and organise side events.
Pre-registration is required and is open for NGOs in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council from 20 September - 5 October 2016. Registration is non-transferrable. If a representative of an accredited organization is not able to attend the Conference, he or she cannot be replaced by another representative. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will convene the first-ever Global Sustainable Transport Conference from 26-27 November 2016 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
The Conference will be held at the highest level and will bring together key stakeholders from Governments, the private sector, and civil society to engage in dialogue that emphasizes the integrated and cross-cutting nature of sustainable transport. All modes of transport—road, rail, aviation and maritime—will be addressed as well as transport both in urban and rural areas, energy and transport, public transport, countries in special situations, road safety, and financing for sustainable transport, as well as finding a new paradigm for transport sustainability. The concerns of developing countries, including least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States, will receive particular attention.
Pre-registration will be open and is required for interested representatives of non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the ECOSOC and the private sector from 19 September - 31 October 2016.
