We have received the following from the EU Commission on Research & Innovation
The report “The role of science, technology and innovation policies to foster the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals” is available online.
The report presents the conclusions of the independent Expert Group on the “Follow-up to Rio+20, notably the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” that was established in March 2015 by the European Commission under Horizon 2020 (Societal Challenge 5 - Work Programme for 2014-2015, pp. 79-80).
The work of the Expert Group aimed to provide advice to the Commission on the role of science, technology and innovation (STI) for implementing the sustainability agenda agreed at the Rio+20 Summit on Sustainable Development of 2012 and in particular the SDGs, including the potential of research and innovation cooperation in this context .
The report elaborates a reference framework in which research and innovation policy and related implementation measures are seen as engines of a transformative agenda built around the universally applicable Sustainable Development Goals. The suggestions and recommendations for future actions contained in the report intend to stimulate the internal reflection in Europe and inside the European Commission on how to orient STI policies in support of the implementation of the SDGs that were adopted at the United Nations Summit of September 2015 and that represent the bulk of the global sustainable development agenda for the next 15 years (the "2030 Agenda").
The members of the Expert Group are Professor Enrico Giovannini (Chairperson), Dr Ingeborg Niestroy (Rapporteur), Dr Måns Nilsson, Dr Françoise Roure and Mr Michael Spanos.
